Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is the idea that cross-platform systems can communicate through a standardized communication methodology.  For example, the technologies inherant to this methodolgy would allow a .NET application to completly communitate with a server platform that may be written in Java or any other language.

SOA has turned around the idea that an application must be proprietary.  Now, most applications are written with the ability to develop platforms through direct programming interfaces.  A complete mash-up of already existing technologies saves our client money because we can utilize already exiting applications and taylor them to their needs.   

Web services are a great example of the technology we use to leverage new functions into legacy models and existing platforms.
